PMDD Symptoms & Tracking
Symptoms
The symptoms of PMDD are similar, but far more intensive, to the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Remember your symptoms are real and you have the right to be heard. PMDD is different for everyone but these are some common symptoms:
Emotional symptoms:
Mood swings
Feeling upset or tearful
Lack of energy
Less interest in activities you normally enjoy
Feeling hopeless
Feeling irritable
Coming into conflict with people around you
Feeling anxious or on edge
Feeling overwhelmed or out of control
Suicidal feelings
Important! If you feel unable to keep yourself safe, it's a mental health emergency - call 999 or go to your nearest A&E
Physical symptoms:
Breast tenderness
Pain in your muscles and joints
Headaches
Feeling bloated
Overeating
problems sleeping
Tracking
If you do one thing for your health journey, make it symptom tracking. It helps you understand your body more effectively, get taken seriously by doctors and can support diagnosis and treatment management.
Track daily for at least 2 months (covering 2 cycles).
Log how symptoms like mood swings and anxious feelings affect your day.
It can be hard to describe your emotional state in hindsight, especially during a short doctor’s appointment. That’s why it’s so important to track your feelings, moods, and physical symptoms as they happen, alongside your period. This helps you and your doctor spot patterns and get a clearer picture of what’s going on.
Feel free to track your symptoms in a notebook, on your phone, or print out our handy symptom tracker PDF.
Alternatively if you prefer to track via your mobile you can use a dedicated app.
Bettii recommends:
1. Clue App: Easy to use with symptom tracking plus helpful reminders. Logging your periods and symptoms regularly can be a key step in diagnosing PMDD. Note: Some features require a paid Clue Plus subscription.
