Adenomyosis affects around 1 in 10 women in the UK. It happens when the cells from the lining of the womb are found in the muscle wall of the womb.
These cells react to your hormones and grow, break down and then bleed during each period. This can cause very painful and heavy periods. Other symptoms include bloating and pain during intercourse or bowel movements.
We don’t yet know what causes Adenomyosis, it could be related to the immune system, genes, or hormones. It may be related to healing post pregnancy or injury to the womb lining.
Adenomyosis is not the same as Endometriosis, although it is quite common to have both, you can also just have Adenomyosis or Endometriosis.
There’s currently no known cure for Adenomyosis, but there are many ways to manage or treat Adenomyosis either through surgery, medication and lifestyle changes (don't worry we'll help you understand what this involves!).
