Incontinence Diagnosis
There are lots of healthcare professionals who can help you by assessing your incontinence. In the NHS it will depend on the commissioning of services in your area. You may be able to self-refer to some services or your GP may refer you to Pelvic Health Physiotherapists, Nurse or Physio led Bladder and Bowel Services or to see a Gynaecologist, Urologist, or Colorectal Consultant.
When you first seek help from a healthcare professional they will usually use your symptoms to help them form an early diagnosis. For bladder incontinence, they may also ask you to provide a urine sample to rule out a urinary tract infection. They will also ask you lots of questions covering areas such as childbearing history, bladder, bowel and vaginal health as these can all have an impact on incontinence symptoms. They may then undertake a physical examination to assess your abdomen and pelvic floor. You may be asked to fill in a bladder or bowel diary to help the clinician to identify patterns and better understand the additional symptoms such as frequency and urgency.
Usually at this point you will be given a suggested treatment plan which may include pelvic floor exercises, bladder or bowel retraining, medication or tips to improve bladder and bowel health.
